Indoor training has become ever more immersive in recent years, thanks to the myriad of training platforms available to distract, inspire or guide you. Gone are the days of a stopwatch and perceived effort where you’d sit lonely in a bedroom or garage cajoling yourself to complete intervals half-heartedly.
With virtual worlds, dynamic video and a plethora of structured workouts to choose from, indoor training is an altogether different experience. Add to that the community aspect, allowing us to ride and race with friends and strangers across the world, and that lonely experience is anything but.
One fact remains constant however — the room in which you ride indoors. For some that’s a spare bedroom, others a temporary corner of the kitchen with iPad propped up against a toaster. Many people have dedicated den decked out with all mod cons. Whether a shed in the garden or a converted study, these havens of pain boast fans for perspiration and cycling paraphernalia for inspiration. So we got to thinking, what would the absolute perfect indoor setup look like if dreams could be reality?
Smart and Stylish
We have to start with the trainer itself, you’ll struggle to ride indoors without one. It’s been a bumper year for indoor trainer brands with many still struggling to fulfil new orders after a surge at the beginning of the global pandemic. Magnetic Days’ Jarvis trainer is unlike any other we’ve seen — equal parts objet d’art and smart technology. We’d be happy to have this on display, particularly the Passoni collaboration edition which comes in gold.
Cinematic Experience
The options for what you look at whilst riding indoors are incredibly broad and they don’t stop at volcanos, race footage and power graphs. Netflix is just as popular a distraction, often paired with Zwift, Sufferfest, TrainerRoad or another platform of preference. Whether you’re catching up on a box set or deeply engrossed in a pixel powered crit race, this Loewe Bild 5 television is sure to bring cinematic immersion to your aerobic exertion. The brushed aluminium finish means it’s elegant when switched off as turned on.

The Air You Breathe
However you ride at some point you’re going to be gulping for air, hoping to get those muscles replenished with oxygen before your interval ends. This Air Purifier from Plus Minus Zero is an elegant piece of furniture that will help keep your training space feeling pure and clean. If you’re going to breathe hard you may as well breathe the best quality air possible.
Totally Absorbing
Staying cool is tough to do indoors. It’s one of the main reasons why we worked so hard to develop our range of lightweight, breathable fabrics. Research from our factory shows that overheating leads to a significant decrease in muscle endurance and an increase in burning energy stores. In other words, massive performance loss. We’re not saying you’re not going to sweat, no apparel is that good! But when you do wipe your brow you should at least make sure it feels nice. These Japanese Olsia towels will do just that.
Soundscaping
Whilst people do listen to music whilst cycling outdoors, you do have to have your wits about you. Riding indoors allowed you to be completely immersed in sound without worry of an accident. What you listen to can have a great impact on getting you through your session; intriguing podcasts, banging tunes or soothing tones can all ease the pain or promote effort. However you like your audio, these Nuraphone headphones react to your personal preferences by learning how you hear to adapt the sound accordingly.
But First, Coffee
Before, after, probably not during — coffee is intrinsically linked to cycling. When cycling outdoors we will often start, end or pause for an espresso so why should indoors be any different. In our ideal space, we’d have the best coffee beans and the most elegant way of making a long black. The AnZa Coffee Machine is available in a slick white and heavy-duty concrete finish, for those of us that need some brutalism in our lives.

Now we’ve spec’d out our space it only remains to decide where it is. The Dry Creek Outbuildings by architects Bohlin Cywinski Jackson look about perfect to us. These simply organised cottage and accompanying office, sit at the edge of a creek and secluded forest in California. With galley kitchen and shower already installed they’re all but ready for us to move in. Delicate ribbon windows provide specific views, introducing light and opening vistas to tangled oaks and moss covered rocks of the creek. The ideal place to enjoy an hour or two of indoor trainer based fun!
Appropriately Dressed
Our inaugural collection has been designed to work hard and look good. We place as much importance on making you feel good as we do performance. For us, the two go hand in hand, which is why our collection of jersey and bibs feature a pared-down pattern that implies speed and movement in a sophisticated cut that compliments. Subtle logo details punctuate the jersey and bibs for understated elegance.
